Introduction

You can use any external program that accepts wav or raw PCM data to encode audio data and use the resulting compressed stream as an output, either to a file, a pipe, or even icecast.

When using an external encoding process, uncompressed PCM data will be sent to the process through its standard input (stdin), and encoded data will be read through its standard output (stdout). When using a process that does only file input or output, /dev/stdin and /dev/stdout can be used, though this may generate issues if the encoding process expects to be able to go backward/forward in the file.

Main operators

The main operators are:

  • output.file.external
  • output.pipe.external
  • output.icecast.external

The available options are the same as the usual output.file and output.icecast operators, with the following additions:

  • process: this parameter is a function that takes the current metadata and return the process to start.
  • header: if set to false then no WAV header will be added to the data fed to the encoding process, thus the encoding process shall operate on RAW data.
  • restart_on_crash: wether to restart the encoding process if it crashed. Useful when the external process fails to encode properly data after some time.
  • restart_encoder: restart encoding process on each new track. Useful in conjonction with the process parameter for audio formats that need a new header, possibly with metadatas, for each new track. This is the case for the ogg container.

Some specific options are available for output.icecast.external:

  • icy_metadata: send new metadata as ICY update. This is the case for headerless formats, such as MP3 or AAC, and it appears to work also for ogg/vorbis streams.
  • shout_raw: ask shout not to do any synchronization. Useful when sending formats that shout does not recognize, like AAC. Since liquidsoap is real-time, data is sent at real-rate anyway.
  • format: shout format. Must be one of “ogg” or “mp3”. Use “mp3” for sending other headerless audio data, such as AAC.

A full support for exotic codecs is not yet available in shout. Current shout API does not allow to set the Content-Type parameter to any arbitrary value. A patch has been submited, hopefully, this limitation will be removed soon.

The restart_on_crash parameter allows you to regulary kill the encoding process. This workaround needs to be used for lame, since the encoder seems to produce garbaged data after running for some time. When doing this trick, you should kill the encoding process in a strong way (kill -9) in order to avoid any issue when the process is terminating its operations.

Wrappers

On top of the basic operators, wrappers have been written for using the lame encoder and the flac encoder to output data to an icecast server, or output to local sound card using aplay. The code is present, as usual, in utils.liq and is as follows.

output.icecast.lame

When preparing this wrapper, we noticed an inconsistency when using the “-x” parameter in lame, which forces audio samples swaping. Depending on the endianess of your architecture, this parameter should or should not be set.

On intel architectures, when using lame 3.97, the parameter “-x” should be present, while when using 3.98, it should not be. The parameter is added when the swap parameter of the wrapper is equal to true.

If you experience issues with garbaged audio data coming out when encoding with lame, you should try to modify this parameter.

output.icecast.flac

This support is not yet working as expected. Current implementation of the external encoding process does not support well the restart_on_track option. It is set to false by default.
